WHO AM I
Derek Brockbank is a Canadian actor born in Oakville, Ontario. He’s had a passion for storytelling ever since he was a child, when he used to perform one-man shows of his favourite films and TV shows for his family. As a result, Derek’s mother enrolled him in community theatre at the age of 9, and he’ll be forever grateful she did, as his love of acting has only grown stronger since then. People fascinate Derek to no end. Why we each think, feel and behave the way we do is beyond interesting to him. Needless to say, this is why getting the opportunity to analyze and embody all sorts of different people is the perfect job for Derek.
Derek is a recent graduate of the joint acting program between Sheridan College and The University of Toronto. He holds an advanced diploma in Acting from Sheridan College. As well as HBA Specialist Degree in Theatre & Drama Studies (with distinction) and a minor in English from The University Of Toronto.
Derek is always excited to dive into a new creative project. Nothing excites him more than reading a script for the first time. Derek loves the process of finding who his character is - justifying their thoughts, feelings and actions and really fighting for what it is they want. Derek eventually always falls in love with every character he plays. While he has played a wide variety of roles - Derek has a particular flair for bringing quirky, eccentric and quick-witted people to life. Due to his natural and sharp comedic timing, Derek often finds himself providing a sense of comic relief to the productions he's in. He takes no issue with this, because while he loves exploring all genres, Derek's first love will always be comedy. He loves making people laugh and telling stories that ultimately make audiences feel good.
Derek's latest theatre roles include: Erysichthon in Metamorphoses, Sir. Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night and Co-creator/various in Then Came The Rain (Theatre Erindale). As well as Percy in 7 Stories, Pugsley Addams in The Addams Family Musical and Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (University Of Toronto). Derek's final theatre school performance was portraying Kulygin in Chekhov's Three Sisters, directed by critically acclaimed actor and director Jim Mezon.
Derek made his directorial debut at the Beck Theatre Creation Festival by directing an original play he wrote “(A)typical Couple.”
